In a popular story, the Moon Rabbit, a disguised Old Man of the Moon, tests a monkey, a fox, and a rabbit by asking for food. The rabbit, having nothing to offer, jumps into a fire to sacrifice himself. Touched by the rabbit’s selflessness, the Old Man reveals his identity and takes the rabbit to the moon, where it becomes a symbol of kindness and sacrifice. Today, people see the rabbit's outline on the moon, especially during the Tsukimi festival.
